Research
1. Content Research:
The client request is open-ended, so we need to decide on what content to build from. From multiple prototypes, trying out the limitation of projection mapping and various ways of content topic, we aim to creat the experience based on:
What story to tell that can maximize the magic -feeling for the audience?

Challenge:
-
Boarder Topic for Hall overview?
-
Specific Topic for in-depth learning?
Decision:
Combining content and stories from various dioramas in AMNH
To tell a specific story in depth.
2. Structure Research:
We research multiple structures of pop-up books. Through playing with various books, we landed on:
Which structure is most stable in the need of a facilitated educational scenario?

Sketching
Based on client feedback on concept choice, we presented a list of page sketches and ideas about each section of the story.

3D Modeling:
To overlook the whole effect, and conduct actual production based on the measurement.
Laser Cutting:
Accurately control the cutout.
Real-scale prototype:
To test out if the designed layers work with projection mapping and animation.

Display station:
We used, foam-core & turning widgets & plywood, to build a stable turning station that allows the facilitated experience to be smooth and durable.
Physical Play bottom:
We incorporate a physical play bottom that lets the facilitator control each projection as a PowerPoint.

Connection diagram
Besides the physical installation, projection mapping and a controller is added to the project for an immersive experience and instructional use.
Adjustment
Page layout adjustment:

With the need of better projection mapping effect and visual integration, we decided to make a combination of illustration book and cut-out.
